Kitch-iti-Kipi
Kitch-iti-Kipi is Michigan’s largest natural freshwater spring. It’s located 12 miles outside the town of Manistique. The name literally means big cold spring, however it was also given the nickname Mirror of the Gods by the Ojibwe. The base of the spring is limestone and about 40 feet down at it’s center. Many of the tree trunks that fall into the spring end up being crusted with lime. Bright aqua water constantly erupts from the spring at a rate of 10,000 gallons per minute. Even though it’s located in the upper peninsula, this spring never freezes in the winter. The spring stays a constant temp of 45 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Chances are you’ll see a trout or two there as well. If you’re in the area, you have to make a stop.
